5% COLA unethical and public servants should be satisfied with their salaries.
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 22/08/2017
The former Minister of Finance – Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke strongly believes that the 5%cola of the Ministers is unethical and public servants should be satisfied with their current salaries.
He said, the Remuneration Authority has evaluated the public servants’ salaries against inflation and related issues and concluded that they were reasonable.
He added the public servants should therefore perform accordingly.
The Former Finance Minister also emphasized that Cabinet Ministers should not receive 5% cola to compensate for the income tax.
They are getting more from the 5% cola and should only have 2- 3% COLA.
The Public Service Association – PSA had expressed grievances over Cabinet’s 5% cola saying there was no calculation undertaken to justify their salaries need.
Meanwhile the Minister of Finance – Hon. Tevita Lavemaau said, the main reason for their cola was the increase in the amount of tax paid to the government.
