The Ministry of Fisheries and the University of Canterbury are surveying the negative impacts of climate change on Tonga’s waters.
The CEO of Fisheries – Dr. Tu’ikolongahau Halafihi says its evident that coral reefs are bleaching due to strong cyclones affecting Tonga and the Region as a result of Climate Change.
The survey will locate the areas affected the most and ways to address the matter appropriately.
He adds with summer approaching, the Ministry is aware of further disruptions to the corals and habitat and sea organisms for daily consumption.
Dr. Halafihi says toxin are produced in small amounts by certain algae and small fish that prey on them are contaminated.
Although Tonga does not have the required resources but national cooperation is required so Tonga could be resilient to the negative impacts of climate change.
