Open-Heart International surgical team visits Tonga for the 5th time.

An open-heart surgical team from Australia is visiting Tonga this week.
This visit is in cooperation with the Open Heart International agency, which has been working closely with Vaiola Hospital since 1986.
This surgical team consists of more than 50 surgeons all of who are volunteers.
Part of the team will arrive tonight and start training with the Vaiola Hospital staff tomorrow in preparation for surgeries to begin next week. The team will be in Tonga for 2-3 weeks.
Vaiola Hospital Superintendent, “Dr. Lisiate ‘Ulufonua, says the surgical team are expected to operate on about 30 patients on this visit.
These patients have medical issues relating to heart problems and cannot be treated in Tonga.
In preparation for this visit, the Vaiola Hospital together with the Tonga Red Cross Society have been organizing blood drives.
Viliami Mahe from the Tonga Red Cross Society, said the blood bank collected 53 blood bags last week. However, they will continue to run blood drives, working closely with supporting business and organizations, to ensure the visiting team has enough blood supplies for their operations.
