Tongans in need of dialysis treatment will soon be able to be treated right here in Tonga with the assistance of a dialysis team from Salt Lake City, Utah.
This morning, a board member of the Dialysis Foundation Dr Salesi Kupu says that approximately twenty percent of the people in Tonga are in urgent need of dialysis treatment.
He also says, this program was initiated after a visit from the Late Queen Mother, Queen Halaevalu Mata’aho and the late King, George Tupou V with doctors a Tongan medical officers at a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
Her late Majesty, the late Queen was promised the dialysis equipment by the Head Doctor as she requested this in the form of a gift from the US medical team.
The Ministry of Health is unable to meet the expenses to purchase, operate, and provide, dialysis treatment in Tonga
Tongans living in America have raised funds to donate to the Ministry of Health to enable them to provide dialysis treatment for their patients.
Dr. Kupu hopes this will be useful to the people of the country as it will prolong their health and promote health awareness.
It has been three years since they started this project and is strongly supported by the Government as well as Dr. Siale ‘Akau’ola and Lord Vaea and also the National Dialysis committee.
Salesi will return to the States tomorrow to finalize the said work for three dialysis machines to be brought in and to train the staff here in Tonga.
