Catholic’s second Synod commenced in Nuku’alofa

Members of the Catholic Church are gathering in Ma’ufanga to mark the beginning of the church’s second synod in Tonga.
The synod is the biggest gathering of the church usually convened to decide an issue of doctrine, administration or application.
The meeting will discuss the major issues faced by the Church in Tonga since it was established 175 years ago.
During the opening mass yesterday, Head of the Catholic Church Diocese of Tonga and Niue – His Eminence Cardinal Mafi said, the synod is an opportunity to encourage members about the teachings of the bible.
He said, members are facing various challenges in life including the children feeling neglected at home.
Members are encouraged to teach the good news of the bible in the family.
More than 100 people are members of the synod including members from abroad.
The first synod was in 1992.
