Construction of boardwalk in Kolomotu’a has been halted
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 04/09/2017
The construction of a boardwalk out on the Kolomotu’a waterfront has been temporarily halted by the Tonga Ports Authority.
This is due to a failure of the contractor to comply with the terms for construction.
Mosese Lavemai, CEO of Ports Authority, says this construction was initially granted a permit only to build on the foreshore but the contractor has extended construction out to the water and this is in contrast to the permit granted.
This construction poses an environmental concern for the Department of Environment, territorial concern for the Ministry of Lands and Survey, a construction concern for the Ministry of Infrastructure and also a security concern for the Ports Authority.
The boardwalk was constructed by, Seaview Lodge and Restaurant and they have not yet made a comment on the issue.
