National cooperation required to reach 50% renewable energy

The Minister for MEIDECC – Poasi Tei has urged the related stakeholders to work collaboratively to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce the heavy reliance on fossil fuel.
The Minister, this morning during a workshop on renewable energy says, Tonga is working towards achieving 50% of Renewable energy by the year 2020.
He also highlighted the key note address from His Majesty during the United Nations General Assembly New York last week to ensure that target numbers 7, 9 and 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals which aims at protecting the environment will be achieved.
The Minister also notes the new regional center for renewable energy in Nuku’alofa and its services to protect our environment from gas emission.
Tonga is still committing to the Paris Agreement on climate change and to withstand the negative impacts of climate change.
Participants include representatives from the Tonga Power Limited, private sectors and regional partners.
