Slight decrease in number of youth smokers in the region Tonga included

About 15 % of youth between the ages of 13-15 smokes in the region Tonga included. This is the outcome of a survey conducted this year compared to 22 % last year.
Minister of Health Hon. Dr Saia Piukala revealed this while launching the Quit Smoking now or Tuku ifi leva campaign this morning.
In his remarks, he says, the outcome of the survey is a good sign that people are actually listening and doing what they are told.
He then highlighted that the Ministry is trying to deliver their role efficiently and no mean of trying to take away the public’s freedom.
Also attending this morning’s program was the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga – H.E Andrew Ford. who is also supportive of the anti- tobacco campaign.
A similar program was held at Vava’u today, where the Ministry’s Tobacco Officer – Le’o mo Lotu says, the number of smokers are on the rise in Vava’u and they are trying to inform the people on the harm that tobacco brings.
The Ministry of Health is working together with Related stakeholders in the Kingdom and abroad, including the Government of Australia and World Health Organization.
