Pīveni Piukala and Siaosi Pōhiva’s contract questioned in Parliament – while Prime Minister denies allocation of TOP$25,000 as their salary
(Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 13/06/2016)
Information which stated that TOP$25,000 was given to Pīveni Piukala and Siaosi Pōhiva as their wages and was later given another TOP$26,000 was NOT TRUE.
The Prime Minister – who’s also Minister of Education and Training – Hon. ‘Akilisi Pōhiva told Members of Parliament this morning.
He made the statement in an attempt to clarify on issues which were raised in Parliament last week.
During this morning’s deliberations – Noble Representative of ‘Eua – Lord Nuku questioned the Prime Minister on the procedures which employ Pīveni and Siaosi Pōhiva at the Ministry of Education.
But the Prime Minister says Pīveni Piukala is employed in a contract signed by himself and Pīveni – an expert in Information Technology.
He continue saying – Siaosi Pōhiva is not employed in a contract basis but has visited the Ministry of Education in his role in the EQAP – a regional body towards education.
However Lord Nuku says the leaked information relating to these contracts and wages is probably from the Ministry of Education itself.
However the Minister of Finance and National Planning – Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke in a previous interview with Radio and Television Tonga says the TOP$25,000 is provided to Pīveni Piukala separately as agreed with the Government if the Education Ministry agreed to his system.
The deliberations then continued to heated debates over the sudden change on Education’s Marking system from Standardization to Raw Marks.
The issue was debated between the Prime Minister and Lord Fusitu’a – the Noble’s Representative of the Two Niuas but the Chairman of the Whole House Committee says discussions must continue to another issue.
