Tonga marks World Maritime Day

It is vital to change seafarer’s mind set from relying on their own expertise when travelling to avoid and reduce number of lives lost at sea.
Speaking during a program to mark World Maritme day, Kelela Tonga the Acting CEO of Infrastructure says, Tongan people are too confident when travelling because they choose their expertise in travelling at sea over information released by authorities.
Constable Selemaia Kisina from the Ministry of Police supported Kelela and said most cases here in Tonga happens when seafarers tend to travel unprepared because they’re familiar with their sea OR they avoid weather issued by the MET office because they believe in signs used by our ancestors.
Hon. Semisi Sika – Minister of Infrastructure says, Tonga benefits from our ocean in many ways but it is also vital to look at its impact.
Include in this morning’s program were sea float parade from Tu’imatamoana to Vuna wharf.
Attending the program were representatives from related Government Ministries, private sectors and students.
The theme for today’s program is “Connecting Ships, Ports and People.”
