In the census 2016 report released by the Statistics Department, earlier this month, it was clear there was a high number of people who did not vote in the 2014 election, despite being of voting age.
Speaking this morning at the election workshop for journalists, the Supervisor of Election, Pita Vuki said that in the 2016 census, 50 thousand people were eligible to vote but only 85% actually registered to vote.
Pita also said the media would be able to help in promoting the importance of voting for the Members of Parliament, especially to the uninterested youths.
According to the Supervisor of Election, the Electoral Commission had been preparing for the general election next year but with His Majesty’s dissolution of Parliament in August, the election is held one year earlier, which is the snap election in 2 weeks time.
